Drink away the guilt
'Kleft' offers new option for socially-aware socialites
'Kleft', Soho Square, employs children of the world's civil wars to stimulate your mind, serve nibbles
Cocktail - if you have any moral fibre the smugness of this very word should abhor you.. Most Londoners with an ounce of moral fibre in their bodies (good on oyu guys!) reject cocktails and the smug, bourgeious indulgence they stand for. And so should all of us.
Right? Yes, right. But not if you're drinking at London's hottest new cocktail bar 'Kleft' where the absolution of your middle-class guilt is woven seamlessly into the cocktail-drinking experience.
The idea is a relatively simple one. Why deny yourself a cocktail on moral grounds when the act of enjoying one could help those less fortunate than you?
At 'Kleft' the barstaff and waiters are not coked-up harlots or preened models but child soldiers from various conflicts around the world.
As you enjoy one of the 83 bespoke inventions of the 'Kleft' head barman, you can shake your head slowly to your waiter's tale of conflict in Biafra. A simple question about where to find the toilets, may end up with you commited to solving the Shia/Sunni divide in eastern Tikrit.
Bottle it! (No, I mean don't)

London's hottest gastropubs
1. The Star and Endive
29 Shoreditch High Street
E1
Dating back to 2001, the 'old Endive' is one of London's most established and revered pubs. Sure, some of the Habitat furniture is a bit pre-9/11 and it could do with bigger plasma screens, but its the traditional authenticity of this place that gets people coming back in their droves.
2. Safe from Harm
Wandsworth Common
SE14
For all parents worried about verucas and sex-offenders, Safe From Harm is idyllic. Here the focus is entirely on looking after your kids with bouncy castles, organic chicken strips and gluten-free Ribena. The remaining 20 square feet of the pub where adults shuffle around waiting for their kids to finish having fun is fairly unspectacular.
3. Pie + Mash
Plaistow VIllas
E14
Jason Statham has already re-defined the perception of British culture for an adoring American fanbase and now he's doing the same for its traditional boozer. The site, a cavernous 500metre long space which was once a Homebase, may not chime with many preconceptions of East End pubs but Statham and his local staff (left) do their best to bring the local terroir into everything they do. Jellied Eels come regular or sashimi style whilst head barman Axel can convert your boring pint of Carlsberg into a scruptious frapped cocktail.
